What Causes Anorgasmia?

Anorgasmia is when a man is not able to orgasm following sexual stimulation.

    * Conditions that affect the nervous system such as spinal cord injuries, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, and nerve damage from prostatectomy (a surgery to treat prostate cancer)

    * Erectile dysfunction

    * Some medications, particularly SSRI antidepressants

    * Drinking too much alcohol

    * Psychological problems including performance anxiety

Anorgasmia also becomes more common with older age.

How is anorgasmia treated?

It can be hard to treat anorgasmia, especially when it is caused by psychological problems.

If the anorgasmia is because of erectile dysfunction, the erectile problems need to be treated first and the ability to orgasm often follows. Changing medication or not drinking as much alcohol may help if the cause is due to drugs or alcohol.

Many men still enjoy pleasuring their sexual partner and the intimacy that comes with being physically close to someone else.

Some men avoid sex because they find it unsatisfying if they can’t orgasm. Partners can also feel worried because they may think their partner isn’t attracted to them and finds them undesirable. Discussing these feelings with an experienced psychosexual counsellor can help.
